Hard Water in Sonoma County: What It Does to Your Pipes and How to Fix It

Yes, many areas of Sonoma County have moderately hard water. Water hardness varies by source — homes on well water tend to have harder water than those on municipal supply — but the effects are the same: scale buildup in pipes, shortened appliance lifespan, dry skin, and spots on dishes and fixtures. A whole-house water softener or filtration system solves the problem at the source.

Hard water isn't dangerous to drink, but it is quietly expensive. It makes your water heater work harder, clogs your showerheads, and shortens the life of every appliance that touches water. If you've noticed any of these signs, here's what's happening and what you can do about it.

What Hard Water Actually Is

Hard water contains elevated levels of dissolved calcium and magnesium. These minerals are picked up naturally as water moves through limestone and soil before reaching your tap. Water hardness is measured in grains per gallon (GPG) or parts per million (PPM).

Classification Grains Per Gallon (GPG) Parts Per Million (PPM)
Soft 0–3.5 0–60
Moderately Hard 3.5–7 61–120
Hard 7–10.5 121–180
Very Hard 10.5+ 180+

Most municipal water in Santa Rosa and surrounding Sonoma County cities falls in the moderately hard range. Homes on private wells — common in unincorporated areas, Petaluma outskirts, Hea

What Hard Water Does to Your Plumbing

Scale buildup in pipes. Over years, calcium deposits accumulate inside your pipes, gradually narrowing the opening and reducing water flow. This is the same process that creates the white crusty buildup around your faucets — except it’s happening inside every pipe in your house where you can’t see it.

Water heater damage. Scale settles on the bottom of your water heater tank and coats the heating elements. This forces the unit to work harder to heat the same amount of water, increasing energy costs and shortening the heater’s lifespan. Tankless water heaters are equally vulnerable — scale inside the heat exchanger reduces efficiency and can trigger error codes.

Fixture and appliance wear. Dishwashers, washing machines, ice makers, and coffee machines all suffer from hard water. The minerals clog valves, coat heating elements, and leave deposits that degrade rubber seals and gaskets over time.

Clogged showerheads and aerators. If you’ve noticed reduced flow from your showerhead or kitchen faucet, mineral buildup in the aerator is a likely cause. You can clean it with vinegar, but the buildup will return if the water isn’t treated.

Signs You Have Hard Water

You probably don’t need a lab test to know. Hard water makes itself obvious:

  • White, chalky buildup around faucets and showerheads
  • Spots and film on dishes and glassware after washing
  • Soap that doesn’t lather well
  • Dry, itchy skin and dull hair after showering
  • Stiff, scratchy laundry even with fabric softener
  • Reduced water pressure that’s gotten worse over time

How to Fix It

There are two main approaches, and the right one depends on what’s in your water and what you want to solve.

Water Softener

A whole-house water softener removes calcium and magnesium through an ion exchange process. It’s the most effective solution for hard water specifically. A quality unit costs $1,500–$4,000 installed and lasts 10–20 years. You’ll need to add salt pellets periodically — about $5–$10 per month for most households.

A softener protects your pipes, extends appliance life, improves soap performance, and eliminates scale buildup. It’s the single most impactful upgrade for homes with hard water.

Whole-House Filtration System

If your water has additional concerns beyond hardness — sediment, chlorine taste, iron staining, or other contaminants — a whole-house filtration system addresses multiple issues at once. These systems range from $1,000 to $5,000+ depending on the configuration and what they’re filtering.

Some homeowners install both: a softener to handle minerals and a filtration system for taste, odor, and sediment.
